Kochi: Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) president Innocent on Wednesday threw his weight behind actor Dileep, entangled in the sensational actress attack case.
"With all this hue and cry, I called up Dileep and asked if there were any truth in these rumors?” Innocent said during a hastily arranged press meet at home. “He said 'no,' he has not done anything wrong,” Innocent added.
When asked why AMMA did not discuss the actress attack case, the Lok Sabha MP said it was not right to discuss an issue that was under the court's consideration.
"We are all with the victim-actress," he said.
The veteran actor spoke to reporters on the recent controversies ravaging Mollywood, including the actress attack case and a high-voltage press meet of AMMA last week, when some actors lost cool as journalists raised questions.
He apologized for the behavior of two actors - Mukesh and Ganesh Kumar - at the press meet after AMMA's general body meeting.
Innocent said he was disappointed to see Ganesh Kumar's letter that sought the disbanding of AMMA. However, Innocent admitted Ganesh did make some valid points. However, even while stating that he was forced to continue as AMMA head, Innocent said that reports of him resigning from the post were untrue.
"I am not resigning as AMMA president. I have been heading the organization for the past 16 years," Innocent added.
The actress, who has worked in Tamil and Telugu films besides Malayalam, was abducted and allegedly molested inside her car for two hours by the accused, who had forced their way into the vehicle on February 17 night.
