Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala police chief has informed the state government that incarcerated gangsters are keeping a grip over their gangs from their prison cells. Director general of police (DGP) Loknath Behera submitted the report after a follow-up on a confidential information filed by the state Intelligence chief.
The report says the gangsters have the facility to link up with their people outside. They make calls from the jail phone and contact their own gang members through 'call diversion.' Temporary jail wardens confidentially provide the criminals with cell phones to make calls. They even receive narcotics and liquor in the jail, the report says.
The DGP also says jail officials are offered financial benefits by the criminals in return for the help that they provide. It was also pointed out that the alleged terrorist Thadiyantavida Naseer, locked up in a Tamil Nadu jail, communicates with his gang and recently settled a dispute of two gangsters in Kochi. The Intelligence chief had reported that Naseer had mediated successfully in the rivalry between two gangsters.
Rs 5 crore paid for soil removal
A prominent real estate entrepreneur in the Marad police station area in Ernakulam district recently bought some land for construction of flats. He had to remove one lakh loads of soil from the place. Gangsters agreed to do the job for Rs 500 per load making it a total of Rs 5 crore.

At the same time, DGP (Prisons) R. Sreelekha says she is not aware of any such Intelligence report. She assured strict action if she is convinced that the report is true.
