Kottayam: The doctor, who sold a prime area of his land to raise funds to build an accommodation facility for orphaned elderly cancer patients coming to the medical college for treatment, passed away. Dr K Madan Mohan, who was also a former captain of the Kerala Ranji Trophy cricket team, had built two floors above his house complete with lift and other facilities at a cost of Rs 30 lakh.
He had set aside Rs 1 crore for the project under the 'Madan Charitable Trust'. He was in the process of registering the trust when he died.
After his retirement, he was working as the vice-president of the Cancer Care Home that was formed by senior doctors and social workers.
The Cancer Care Home provides help and support to cancer patients visiting the medical college for radiation and other treatment.
He had set aside a major share of his pension for charitable activities.
An avid animal lover, he had 20 dogs at his home. After his death, animal lovers are planning to move these dogs to a shelter home for stray dogs.
Madan represented Kerala in 32 first class matches. He made his Ranji debut in the 1961-62 season. Kerala recorded their first major win - over Hyderabad - under his captaincy.
Madan, a right-handed batsman and an occasional right-arm medium pacer, played his last first class match in the 1970-71 season.
He made 828 runs at a modest average of 14.78, besides picking up five wickets.
He is survived by wife Dr N Geetha (former Head of the department, Anaesthesia department, MCH, Kottayam) and sons Vinod and Sandeep.
