Kochi: Varapuzha sub-inspector (SI) G S Deepak is likely to be the first accused in the sensational custodial death of Sreejith.
The Special Investigation Team, which arrested the SI, has filed murder charges against him.
Deepak will be produced before the court on Saturday. The bail plea of three policemen who are in remand will be heard by the Paravoor court on Saturday.
The four police personnel were arrested as initial probe revealed that they were involved in the brutal assault of Sreejith.
Deepak was a suspect from the time Sreejith was admitted to the hospital with grave injuries inflicted in custodial torture at Varapuzha police station.
Sreejith's mother and wife had told the SIT that Deepak had cruelly assaulted him. The investigators are in possession of several evidence that confirm their claim.
Deepak was arrested on Friday after an 8-hour interrogation. He was questioned at the Aluva police club by a team led by crime branch IG S Sreejith.
Deepak has been booked on charges of murder as well as assault during illegal custody. Sreejith was handed over to Deepak by the members of the now-disbanded Rural Tiger Force (RTF).
Deepak was made an accused as it was assumed that Sreejith was assaulted at the police station also. Deepak, who was on leave on the day of the incident, was called to the Varapuzha station by a superior officer. He has revealed the identity of this officer to the probe team.
Reportedly, Deepak arrived at the station at night on April 6 to register a case against Sreejith and a few others on charges of attacking the family of one Vasudevan at his house. Vasudevan committed suicide following this incident.
Two witnesses and three accomplices of Sreejith have revealed that the three RTP personnel, who are now under arrest, were seen assaulting him in the vehicle in which he was taken after his arrest.
However, no one saw Sreejith being assaulted at the Varapuzha station, though the medical board that reviewed the post-mortem report found that the youth had been assaulted there too.
Sreejith received fatal injuries outside the station, but wounds caused by the torture at the station worsened his condition.
The post-mortem report has said that Sreejith died of 'blunt trauma' in the abdomen and there were multiple injuries on his body.
Three members of the now disbanded Rrural Tiger Force (RTF) Jithinraj, Sumesh and Santhosh, were arrested earlier and have been charged under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (punishment for murder).
The SIT will question Paravur inspector Chrispin Sam, who is facing disciplinary action, ASI Sudheer, and senior CPO Santhosh Baby.
Seven police personnel, including Sam, Sudheer, Baby and Deepak, were suspended on the basis of a report filed by IG Sreejith.
The IG had found that the SI and CI had made serious lapses in handling the situation.
The statement of rural SP A V George will be taken once the interrogation of suspended police officers is over. It was on the orders of the SP that the policemen arrested Sreejith and other accused were arrested.
Sreejith's family, meanwhile, has expressed satisfaction in the arrest of the policemen, including the SI.
The SIT is also probing whether Sreejith was arrested by mistake in connection with Vasudevan's death.
Vasudevan's son Vineesh had alleged police had mistaken the deceased for another Sreejith, whom he had named in his complaint lodged in connection with his father's death.
