Kochi: The Kochi Corporation council meeting convened to discuss the disruption of the Ro-Ro service to West Kochi ended in a ruckus on Saturday.

The opposition members restrained Mayor Soumini Jain in her chamber and even locked her up for some time.

Police arrived to free the Mayor from confinement who was then admitted to a hospital as she complained of physical uneasiness.

The Council meeting on Ro-Ro service witnessed dramatic scenes from the beginning. Ruling and opposition councillors locked in a fierce argument which soon developed into a scuffle.

The opposition said that the people had lost their trust in the Mayor and that she should resign from the post. The Mayor should also apologise for the lapse on the part of the Corporation, said the opposition members.

However, the Mayor defended herself by pointing out that the fault lay with the inland navigation department.

She said that the state government was responsible for the inconvenience faced by the people.

When the Mayor refused to offer an apology, the opposition members locked Soumini Jain in her chamber.

Women members of the council also alleged that male police officers had misbehaved with them.
