Thiruvananthapuram: Surya and Ishaan K Shan made history by becoming the first transgender couple in Kerala. The two were united in matrimony at a function held in Mannam Club in the state capital. People from all walks of life attended the ceremony blessed the couple.
The two had decided to spend the rest of their lives together overcoming several obstacles. The wedding took place with the support of both families.
Surya is the adopted daughter of noted makeup artists Renju Renji. Ishaan’s foster mother is Sreekutty. Surya’s parents are Vijayakumaran Nair and Usha Vijayan of Madathuvilakathu house, Pattoor. Ishaan is the son of Vallakkadavu Mohammed Kabir and Shanifa Kabir.
Surya has been in the limelight for long with appearances in several television comedy shows.
As Surya’s ID card mentions her gender as a female and Ishaan’s as male, there were no legal hurdles in conducting the wedding. Both had undergone gender transformation surgery.
Looking graceful in a traditional silk saree and ornaments, Surya said she was excited about the new episode in her life.
"We want to lead a normal family life and be a role model to our fellow community members," Ishaan told reporters.
The ceremony at an auditorium in the heart of the city was marked by the presence of a number of transgenders, who danced to some foot-tapping film songs when the "bride" entered the auditorium.
A number of dignitaries including former Rajya Sabha Member T N Seema (CPI-M), writer-activist J Devika, CPM councillor I P Binu were among those who attended the marriage function.
