Thrissur: A BJP activist, who plays a key role in the party’s IT cell, has been arrested for issuing a death threat to college lecturer Deepa Nishant.
Biju Nair, a Thiruvananthapuram resident, issued the threat as a reply to a Facebook post baying for the blood of the Kerala Varma College lecturer.
The Thrissur West police had already arrested four persons on Nishant’s complaint. They are accused of posting the lecturer’s phone number in for-porn WhatsApp groups and nudging fellow members to call her up. One of them, Anish, is a BJP worker from Mala.
Nishant was targeted by the right-wing cyber groups after she copied a post by Deepak Shankaranarayanan condemning the rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl near Kathua in Jammu in January.
Nair was summoned to Thrissur by the police. He was arrested under section 506 of the Indian Penal Code and later released on bail. The police said that they were about to arrest Ramesh Nair, the writer of the original post that called for the death of the lecturer.
