After 49 days, Gulbarga ragging victim discharged from hospital

Edappal: A nursing college student, who was allegedly forced to drink a toilet cleaning solution by senior students at her hostel in Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) in Karnataka, was discharged from hospital on Tuesday.

Doctors at the Kozhikode medical college hospital where the 18-year-old ragging victim, had been undergoing treatment for the past 49 days, said she would need rest for a few months more.

It has been alleged that senior students made her drink the cleaning solution as part of ragging and that she was mentally and physically harassed. The girl, who suffered internal burns, was admitted to the medical college hospital on June 2, after she had undergone treatment in Kalaburagi and Edappal.  

The student had been tube fed, and she was now on a liquid diet. The state government has taken up her medical expenses after the incident became a controversy and with the intervention of several people's representatives and organizations.

The Karnataka police, meanwhile, arrested three girl students--all Malayalis--in connection with the incident. One suspect is still at large.

The girl, who reached home here, said she would not return to her college, Al-Qamar College of Nursing.She said no one from the college had inquired of her well being. The girl said she wanted to continue education in Kerala, but added that her certificates were still with Al-Qamar.
