Noida: Former cabinet secretary T S R Subramanian, who served in the United Front government headed by HD Deve Gowda in the mid-1990s, died on Monday. He was 79.
A 1961-batch officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, Subramanian served as cabinet secretary from August 1996 to March 1998.
Earlier, Subramanian was textiles secretary at the Center and was responsible for clearing genetically modified variety of cotton - a decision which he later regretted.
Subramanian was sent to Uttar Pradesh as chief secretary in 1992 in the aftermath of the demolition of Babri Masjid, when emotions were running high in the state.
The cause of death and other details were immediately not known. His cremation will take place at the Lodhi Road crematorium here at 5.30 pm, the association said.
Condoling his death, PM Modi tweeted - "Shri TSR Subramanian distinguished himself as an outstanding civil servant. He also left a mark with his prolific writings and interventions on important public causes. Saddened by his demise. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends,"
Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of State (MoS) for personnel Jitendra Singh and other senior IAS officers have condoled his death.
The MoS said, "Saddened by news of the demise of former cabinet secretary T S R Subramanian. My condolences to the entire IAS fraternity and his family."
