Pillar on Taj Mahal premises collapses in heavy rain

Taj Mahal, an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river, was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.

Agra: A pillar of the entry gate to the world famous Taj Mahal monument collapsed on Thursday as heavy rain continued to batter several parts of Uttar Pradesh.

The pillar on the southern entry gate of the monument fell due to rain late Thursday, reports said.

No casualties have been reported.

Taj Mahal, an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river, was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his wife Mumtaz Mahal.

The tomb is the centrepiece of a 17-hectare (42-acre) complex, which includes a mosque and a guest house, and is set in formal gardens bounded on three sides by a crenellated wall.

3 kids die

Three children died in Mathura district on Wednesday after a tin roof of their one-room house collapsed. The incident took place when their parents,  both daily wage labourers, were not at home.

Crops were damaged in several areas in Nandgaon, Vrindavan, Kosi Kalan areas of Mathura district.
