Khelo India School Games: Kerala finish third in athletics

New Delhi: Kerala, riding on fine performances by relay teams, finished third in track and field competitions of the Khelo India School Games at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Saturday.

Uttar Pradesh took the overall title in athletics while Tamil Nadu stood second.

Kerala won a total of 17 medals, including five gold, seven silver and five bronze. Aparna Roy, who won gold in the 100 meter hurdles, was adjudged the best athlete in girls’ category.

Kerala's dominance in relay events was overwhelming. The boys won gold in 4x400 meter while the girls accounted for the yellow metal in the 4x100 meter category. The state stood second in both boys' 4x100 meter and girls' 4x400 meter relay events.

Earlier, Kerala opened their account on the final day of the track and field competitions with two bronze medals in boys’ and girls’ 400m events through T K Sayooj, a native of Koorachundu in Kozhikode district, and A S Sandra, a student of St Thomas GHS, Perumanoor, Ernakulam.

The gold-winning boys’ 4x400 meter relay team comprised R K Sooryajith, Akash Varghese, T K Sayooj, and S Kiran. The members of the girls’ 4x100 meter relay squad were P D Anjali, Anu Joseph, Ann Rose Tomy, and Ancy Sojan.
