Recently, numerous reports of fit youngsters collapsing during exercises have sparked concerns.
Dr KK Pradeep, Senior Consultant - Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at the Rajagiri Hospital, Kochi, explains how to check whether your heart is workout-ready.
Dr Pradeep says workout readiness depends on a person’s risk profile.
Those under 35, who are active, non-smokers, and have no family history, generally need no extra testing.
The doctor advises heart tests for those over 40, who are inactive, or have a family history of heart disease, before starting moderate exercise.
They should consult a doctor, check their blood pressure, undergo an ECG, test their cholesterol, and undergo a treadmill test.
Dr Pradeep says awareness of one’s body is key to monitoring heart health during workouts, and intensity should be increased gradually.
Chest pains, shortness of breath, or palpitations during previously comfortable activity should be a warning sign.
Dr Pradeep clarifies that not all discomforts mean heart attacks — they can also result from lack of rest or sleep, stimulants like caffeine, or overtraining.
