There is good news for motorcycle enthusiasts who cannot afford the high price tags of iconic performance bikes such as a Harley Davidson or Triumph. Upcoming motorcycles from Lohia and Mahindra two wheelers are set to make performance motorcycling affordable to Indians. These cruisers and sports bikes are priced in the range of Rs 1.50-2 lakhs.
UM-Lohia cruiser
Lohia Industries announced that US-based UM motorcycle’s Renegade series of bikes will be showcased in the Delhi auto expo in February. The company will first launch a cruiser bike for the Indian market.
UM Motorcycles and Lohia Auto formed a 50-50 joint venture in 2014 for the Indian market. The joint venture plans to sell UM’s 300cc-500cc motorcycles in India. The first phase of the joint venture is at an investment of Rs 100 crore.
As per the joint venture, Lohia Auto’s Kashipur facility in Uttarakhand will be used to manufacture the vehicles. The facility has an annual production capacity of one lakh two-wheelers and 40,000 three-wheelers. Lohia Auto Industry, a part of Lohia Group that has an annual turnover of Rs 600 crore, currently manufactures three-wheelers with diesel engines. They have opened five dealerships in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and have plans to open another 50 in Southern states going forward.
Mahindra Mojo 300

Mojo, the premium most product of Mahindra two wheelers will debut next month. The company had unraveled the concept of Mojo in 2011 itself when Mahindra two wheelers started its operations.
However, the bike’s commercial launch has been delayed and the Mojo 300 is all set to hit the market with minor changes from the concept bike showcased in 2012. The changes were incorporated in France.
Mahindra, which has gone ahead with a practical design for the front end of the bike, has modified its dual headlamps. Apart from this, the digital meter that has an analogue tachometer now consists of a gearshift light and a low-fuel warning indicator. The bike comes with radial brakes, upside down forks, and Pirelli sport demon tyres. The Mojo features a 299.5 cc liquid cooled four-stroke single-cylinder engine that produces30 NM of torque and 27 bhp at 6,000 rpm. This capable engine is mated to a six-speed gear box.
The Mojo will compete with KTM Duke 200, Honda CBR 250R and Bajaj Pulsor AS 200. Though there is no clarity on pricing, the company is expected to price Mojo around Rs 1.5 lakh.
