Stella Mary's College students clean Muvattupuzha river

Piravom: Students of Stella Mary’s College, Kizhumuri are on a noble mission to clean the Muvattupuzha river. The first phase of their activities was carried out along the stretch of the river passing through Ramamangalam panchayat.

The students collected mainly plastic waste accumulated in the river between the check dam being built as part of the Choondi drinking water project and Elambassery bathing ghats by traveling in a canoe. The waste will be handed over to processing units, said the students.

Drinking water for Tripunithura municipality and surrounding areas is sourced from the Choondi project. Moreover, the Kerala Water Authority’s Methipara project, which supplies water to Ramamangalam, Pambakuda and Maradi panchayats, draws water from the Muvattupuzha river.

The river gets polluted mainly as a result of dumping of garbage – especially slaughterhouse waste – from the Peruvam-muzhi bridge and the big bridge at Ramamangalam.

Launching the cleaning drive, college NSS unit director Arun Paul Kunnil said that awareness drives would also be carried out to sensitize people regarding the dangers of dumping waste in the river.
