Lone woman survivor under scanner after four eerie deaths in family

Thalassery: Four mysterious deaths in the last three months at a house in Padannakkara, near Pinarayi, have confounded the police. A woman who is the sole survivor in the family and a few youngsters who were regular visitors at the house are being closely watched by the police.

The police have also arranged security for the woman, Soumya, who is currently admitted to the intensive care unit at Thalassery cooperative hospital after she collapsed after acute vomiting.

Women police officers are providing round-the-clock security to her.

Though the police confirmed that all the four reported deaths were due to unnatural circumstances, the details were not divulged.The investigative team said that they have not been able to interrogate Soumya so far, but recorded the statements of her relatives and neighbours who had close contact with the family.

The police are conducting the investigation earnestly as the deaths had attracted media attention. Thalassery CI KE Premachandran is the investigating officer.

Four family members of Vannathamveettil Kunjikannan’s house had died under mysterious circumstances in the last six years. Soumya is Kunjikannan’s daughter.

In 2012, Soumya’s one-and-a-half-year-old daughter died of severe vomiting. On January 21 this year, Soumya’s younger daughter Aiswarya too passed away after exhibiting the signs of uneasiness that were shown by her sister earlier. When Soumya’s mother Vadavathy Malathy too died due to severe vomiting on March 7, the relatives demanded for a postmortem. Exactly 41 days after Malathy’s postmortem was conducted, Kunjikannan too died of the same reasons.

A police investigation was demanded after Kunjikannan’s death sparked doubts among the relatives and locals.
