Nilambur: The police are heroes for residents of the Scheduled Tribe colony at Thazhe Mylampara, Karulayi. Having lived in squalor and poverty for long, the residents saw their lives taking a turn for the better following the intervention of the law enforcers.
Before the cops arrived
There are five houses in the Thazhe Mylampara colony where around 25 persons, including children, live. Though the houses were built by the authorities, no maintenance works were carried out later. The surroundings were also squalid. The well in the colony had not been cleaned for years and the water in it was not fit for use. Panchayat member Lissy Jose, seeing the pitiable condition of the residents, brought the matter to the attention of the Pookkottumpadam police.
People-friendly police
The Nilambur circle had been sanctioned Rs 50,000 under the Janamaithri police project. Circle inspector K M Biju allotted Rs 30,000 from this amount to the Pookkottumpadam police station. Along with contributions received from police personnel and the public, the funds required for painting the exteriors as well as interiors were obtained. Along with giving a fresh look to the houses, supply of safe drinking water was ensured by cleaning the well and installing a pump and a water tank.
Awareness programmes were conducted to familiarize residents with sanitation measures. They were also cautioned regarding the perils of resorting to drug, alcohol and other addictions.
Police officials and social workers Usman, Noushad and Jamsheer regularly visited the colony to make all this happen.
Praises showered on police
After all the works were over, it was time for celebrations. DySP M P Mohanachandran inaugurated the drinking water supply. CI Biju, sub-inspectors Amritarangan and M Velayudhan, Lissy Jose and headman of the colony Chathan spoke.
Mementos were presented by the DySP for meritorious service to station driver P. Niyas and for social service and investigation to CPO S Abhilash.
When the event concluded with distribution of food, the colony residents made their appreciation for the police evident with a loud and long round of applause.
