What defines a lead role?: Urvashi on National Film Awards selection process

Actress Urvashi has voiced her concerns over the criteria used to decide winners at the National Film Awards, particularly in the lead acting categories.
"I am not sad about it. I was selected for a good film, it did well, and the audience accepted it," she said. "But I do wonder — what is the basis on which a National Award is given? Is there a measuring scale for it? Who decides what qualifies as the best performance to select the Best Actor or Best Actress? The Centre and the State should be transparent about this. They have a responsibility to let us know on what grounds these awards are decided."

Urvashi also expressed joy at being a part of 'Ullozhukku', calling it one of the most physically demanding roles she has ever done.

She won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in 'Ullozhukku'. Both Urvashi and Parvathy were in contention for Best Actress for their roles in Christo Tomy's film. This marks Urvashi’s second win in the Best Supporting Actress category at the National Awards.

Shah Rukh Khan and Vikrant Massey shared the Best Actor award for their performances in 'Jawan' and '12th Fail', respectively. Rani Mukerji was named Best Actress for 'Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway'. '12th Fail' also won the award for Best Film of 2023.
