Malayalam filmmaker Nisar, renowned for delivering mainstream hits on modest budgets, passed away on Monday while undergoing treatment in Changanassery. He was 65.
Born in Thrikkodithanam near Changanassery, Nisar made his directorial debut in 1994 with the successful film ‘Sudinam’. Over the next two decades, he helmed 27 films across Malayalam and Tamil cinema. His final release was ‘Laughing Apartment Near Girinagar’ in 2018. The directors’ union FEFKA paid tribute to Nisar, highlighting his ability to complete projects efficiently without compromising on quality.
His pragmatic approach and technical ingenuity — including clever use of “dupes” and creative shots to save time — have inspired many young filmmakers. He was also praised for handling complex roles with busy actors, such as Jagathy Sreekumar, completing intricate sequences in just a day or two. Nisar’s experimental single-shot film ‘Two Days’ was screened at multiple festivals and earned several awards. Relatives confirmed that his burial will take place later at a local mosque.
