Actor Aishwarya Lekshmi has announced that she is stepping away entirely from social media. The decision comes after the actor reflected on the ways these platforms, initially intended to connect her with fans and peers, gradually became controlling rather than supportive.

In an Instagram story, Aishwarya explained that, as an artist, she had once considered social media essential for staying relevant in the industry. “For the longest time, I subscribed to the idea that social media is much needed to keep me in the game,” she wrote. “I thought it necessary to move with the times, especially considering the nature of the industry we are in. Somehow, something that was supposed to cater to us has reversed, making me cater to it instead.”

She added that the constant engagement with social media distracted her from her work and research. “It has taken away every original thought from me, affected my vocabulary and language, and made even the simplest pleasures joyless,” she said.

Aishwarya emphasised that her choice is about reclaiming her individuality. “I refuse to be one created from a generic mould and to cater to the whims of the online world. As a woman, it took a lot of effort to even recognize the controlling aspects of social media, and I trained myself harder to resist it.”

Acknowledging the risks of stepping away from digital visibility, she wrote, “I’m taking the risk of being forgotten. In today’s times, being off the ‘Gram’ often means being out of mind. But this is the right choice for the artist in me and the little girl I still carry inside—keeping her original and choosing complete internet obsolescence.”
She concluded with a hopeful note for the future: “Here’s hoping I create more meaningful connections and cinema in life. And if I do end up making meaningful cinema, give me love—old style. Yours happily, Aishwarya Lekshmi.”
