Speaking to the media at a press meet, the actor described the recognition as one of the most significant milestones in his 48-year career.

"In my career spanning nearly five decades, I consider the Dadasaheb Phalke Award as one of the biggest wins,” said Malayalam cinema icon Mohanlal, reacting to the announcement of his selection for one of Indian cinema’s highest honours.
Speaking to the media at a press meet, the actor described the recognition as a significant milestone in his 48-year-long career. “This award has been received by the big names of cinema before, and I feel deeply honoured to join their ranks. I remember everyone who has been with me through these 48 years. Many who stood by me are no longer here, but I remember them all at this moment,” he said.

Mohanlal shared that the news reached him through a call from the Prime Minister’s office, adding, “It was something I could never have imagined, not even in my dreams. This is an award for Indian cinema, and I thank God for it. In any work, one must show honesty and do it properly. Many people have helped me in this, and I share this award with them. I have no personal desire for special roles. The goal is to make good films, collaborate with good people, and getting good roles is a matter of luck. When climbing high, notice those who are with you. Likewise, when coming down, they will be there to support you. If you ignore them, no one will watch over you when you descend.”

Mohanlal, who has received numerous accolades including the National Award, said what makes this honour unique is its stature as the highest recognition in Indian cinema. “Being the second Malayali to receive this award is truly special. I consider this award a win for Indian cinema as a whole,” he added.

Acknowledging the role of Malayalam cinema in shaping his career, the actor said, “I thank Malayalam cinema, which made me who I am. I share this award with everyone—it is not mine alone. This is a God-given honour.” He also revealed that he informed his mother about the recognition, adding, “I have her blessings. She is not well, but she understood it, and I know that.”

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award will be formally presented at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on Tuesday. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) lauded Mohanlal’s contributions, saying his cinematic journey inspires generations. On X, the ministry posted: “Mohanlal’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! The legendary actor, director, and producer is being honoured for his iconic contribution to Indian cinema. His unmatched talent, versatility, and relentless hard work have set a golden standard in Indian film history.”

Mohanlal becomes only the second Malayali actor to receive this prestigious award, after acclaimed filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, who was honoured in 2004. Other prominent recipients include stalwarts such as Amitabh Bachchan, Rajinikanth, Vinod Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, and Shyam Benegal.
