The announcement of this year’s Kerala State Film Awards has sparked controversy, with the selection of rapper Vedan as Best Lyricist for his song ‘Viyarppu Thunniyitta Kuppayam’ triggering a heated debate on social media. Widespread protests have erupted over the jury’s decision to honour Vedan, who has been accused of two sexual assault cases . The first case involves a young doctor whom he allegedly deceived with a promise of marriage while the other case pertains to the harassment of a research student.
Social media users are now drawing parallels between the current situation and the denial of awards to actors from the film ‘Home’ two years ago. Despite stellar performances by Indrans and Manju Pillai in that movie, both were denied awards because of sexual assault allegations against the film’s producer. Indrans had even publicly questioned that decision by asking, “Should all members of a family be punished for the mistake of one?” Director Rojin Thomas and actor Manju Pillai had also expressed disappointment over being overlooked.
Now, actor and lawyer Manju Vani has reignited the discussion through a social media post drawing parallels between these two episodes. “Two years ago, the State Award jury ignored a beautiful film because a case existed against its producer. Now, the award for Best Lyricist goes to a person facing sexual assault charges. Indrans chettan and Manju chechi didn’t have the luck. That’s all,” she wrote.
Filmmaker and actor Joy Mathew has also openly criticised the decision to honour Vedan. Vedan, who is currently out on bail, faces different charges, including possession of ganja and a leopard’s tooth. He has been previously named in allegations under the MeToo campaign as well. Despite these controversies, it is learnt that the strong stance of Prakash Raj, the jury chairman, played a decisive role in finalising Vedan’s selection. Prakash Raj had reportedly argued that recognition should be given for Vedan’s unique writing style, which challenged the established norms of lyric writing. This opinion ultimately found acceptance among the jury despite opposition from some members.
Social media discussions are now intensifying, highlighting the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy of double standards; for once denying awards to deserving actors due to allegations against the film's producer, while this time honouring an individual himself facing serious criminal charges.
