Dark comedy 'One Battle After Another' topped this year’s Golden Globe nominations with nine nods, making the Leonardo DiCaprio–led thriller an early frontrunner on the road to the Oscars.
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the film follows DiCaprio as a washed-up revolutionary who springs into action when his daughter’s life is threatened. The Warner Bros film will compete in the best musical or comedy category alongside contenders like 'Marty Supreme' and 'Bugonia'.

Norwegian family drama 'Sentimental Value' earned eight nominations, followed by supernatural horror 'Sinners' with seven. Both films are in the running for best movie drama, along with Guillermo del Toro’s 'Frankenstein' and 'Hamnet', a story centred on William Shakespeare’s family.

Del Toro said in a statement that 'Frankenstein' was a dream project and that this recognition “means so much.”

George Clooney and Adam Sandler scored nominations for 'Jay Kelly', while Dwayne Johnson earned a nod for 'The Smashing Machine' and Jessie Buckley for 'Hamnet'. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were nominated for their roles in 'Wicked: For Good', though the second part of Universal’s Wizard of Oz prequel didn’t make it to the musical or comedy list.
The Golden Globes are among the first awards handed out ahead of the Oscars in March. This year’s ceremony will air on January 11.

International films shine
Golden Globe voters, who are entertainment journalists from around the world, showed strong support for global cinema. Along with 'Sentimental Value', they recognised Iranian director Jafar Panahi’s revenge thriller 'It Was Just an Accident' and Brazilian drama 'The Secret Agent'.

“The biggest surprise is how well the international films performed,” said Debra Birnbaum, editor of Gold Derby. “These are the films to watch throughout awards season.”

Netflix topped all networks with 22 nominations, even as it continues its push to reshape Hollywood through acquisitions, including bidding for HBO’s parent company Warner Bros Discovery. Independent distributor Neon, behind films like 'Sentimental Value', 'It Was Just an Accident' and 'The Secret Agent', secured the most film nominations with 21.

Golden Globe winners are chosen by more than 300 entertainment journalists. The voting body has expanded and reformed in recent years following criticism over ethics and diversity.

Comedian Nikki Glaser will return as host, with the ceremony airing live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
