Kerala Chalachitra Academy vice-chairperson Kukku Parameswaran has maintained that everyone is bound to respect court verdicts in India, irrespective of whether they agreed or disagreed with it. She was responding to a media query at the IFFK venue in Thiruvananthapuram regarding the verdict in the actress assault case, which rocked the film industry.
On December 8, the court acquitted Mollywood actor Dileep in the case, while convicting six others, including Pulsar Suni. She reminded the media that the accused had already been punished. “In India, we are obligated to respect the court’s decision, whether we accept it or not. Only in the ‘people’s court’ would opinions differ. Right now, this issue is under judicial scrutiny,” she said.
“Why are we overlooking that fact that the accused has been punished? The court has delivered its judgment. The focus should be on the reality of abuse and assault—how terrifying and real it is for someone to go through such an ordeal. The court has confirmed that this assault happened, and isn’t that a chilling truth? That should be the focus of discussion, not other matters. This issue isn’t limited to the film industry; it can happen anywhere, and the court’s verdict proves that. It’s an unbearable truth that needs to be addressed.”
As general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), Kukku had previously remained silent on the incident. Speculation has been rife about whether AMMA would consider reinstating actor Dileep now that he has been acquitted.
