Kozhikode: Renowned Mappilappattu singer, music composer and tabla artiste Kozhikode Abubacker, popularly known as Avukka, died at his residence at Ullisseri Kunnu in Areekad here around 12.30am Tuesday. He was 80.
Abubacker, who had composed music for around 3,000 songs, had been undergoing treatment for nearly two months after suffering a stroke. He was a prominent figure in the Mappilappattu tradition and had created several timeless hits that remain popular among music lovers. His compositions included “Karayaanum Parayaanum Manam Thurannirakkaanum,” rendered by K.J. Yesudas, and the popular song “Yatheemin Thaane..,” sung by K.S. Chithra.
Besides Yesudas and Chithra, several leading Malayalam playback singers, including M.G. Sreekumar, Sujatha, Afsal and Shahabaz Aman, have lent their voices to his compositions. Abubacker is survived by his wife, K.V. Zubaida, and children Ghulam Ali, Roshni Femin and Sajina. His final prayers will be held at Manthottam Juma Masjid, followed by burial at Manthottam Kabarstan after noon on Tuesday.
