Every mango season, social media regularly cooks up a new set of 'health alerts' that revolve around the king of fruits. From stating that it can cause digestive issues to the claim that the combination creates a 'poisonous acid' in your stomach, the viral message is quick to hit the panic button. What we found
When our online fact-check team researched the incidents mentioned in the message, we could not find any official reports of deaths in Chandigarh or elsewhere in recent times, caused by consuming cold drinks with mangoes. There is also no scientific evidence to suggest that drinking cold beverages after eating mangoes can lead to death. Although this claim has circulated on social media for many years, no supporting evidence has ever been found.

What experts say
According to studies by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI), there is no evidence that any combination of foods can directly cause death. The claim that drinking cold beverages after eating mangoes can be fatal appears to rest solely on the fact that both mangoes and cold drinks contain high levels of sugar. Consuming excessive sugar triggers the body to release insulin, which lowers blood sugar levels and, in extreme cases, can lead to fainting. However, this cannot be considered a cause of death.

In addition, mangoes are rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, potassium and fibre, and they also contain a good amount of antioxidants. While certain foods can be harmful to people with allergies, these are usually specific foods known to trigger allergic reactions. For example, a person with a peanut allergy should avoid peanuts. However, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that any particular food combination is harmful to everyone. Verifications with the health experts, too, have debunked claims linking mangoes and cold drinks to death.
