The helmet is the most important piece of equipment for the safety of bike riders. However, during the monsoon season, it is common for helmets to get wet, develop an odour, and get fungal infections inside. Sometimes, incidents of lizards, insects, and, rarely, even small snakes entering helmets left outside have been reported. Therefore, care must be taken when maintaining and storing the helmet to avoid health and safety issues. Here are a few tips to ensure your helmet doesn't give you diseases:

What to do if a helmet gets wet in the rain?
a)Immediately after returning from the rain, wipe the helmet's outer surface with a dry cloth. This will prevent water spots and dirt from accumulating.
b) It is best to dry the rest of the helmet in a well-ventilated area. Also, rainwater and mud settling on the visor can cause it to become cloudy. Clean with a soft cloth and clean water.
c) Do not place the helmet directly in strong sunlight. Excessive heat can weaken the inner protective layers of certain helmets.

How to clean the pads inside the helmet?
In newer types of helmets, the inner pads can be removed. Such helmet pads can be washed using lukewarm water and mild soap. Do not use harsh chemicals. Reinsert only after it has dried thoroughly. If the pads cannot be washed, a helmet cleaner spray can be used. To avoid odour, do not place the helmet in a closed cupboard immediately after use; keep it in a well-ventilated area for some time.

Can snakes or insects enter the helmet?
Generally, this is rare. However, insects and sometimes small reptiles can enter helmets that are left unused for a long time, either outside or in a shed, close to the ground. To avoid this, do not place the helmet on the ground. It is safer to hang the helmet on a wall hook or a stand. Do not leave it outside for extended periods. Especially during the monsoon, do not leave the helmet in damp places.

Check before wearing the helmet
Before wearing the helmet, shake it and check inside. Keep the visor closed. Leaving the visor open when not in use can let insects in. Using a helmet bag is also recommended. Using a helmet cover or bag will reduce the entry of dust and insects.
