Post-partum UTI can even lead to infertility: Doctor explains
Postpartum UTIs are common due to childbirth pressure and hygiene issues. Neglecting them can cause severe kidney and pelvic problems. Dr Thulasidevi KC, senior consultant at Rajah Hospital, Chavakkad, explains.

After giving birth, women's attention often shifts entirely to the baby and their other responsibilities. In the meantime, many tend to ignore their own health concerns, especially physical discomforts. Chronic urinary pain and infection (Urinary Tract Infection - UTI) is a major health problem that women regularly face after childbirth. Many people hesitate to seek proper treatment, thinking it is normal after childbirth. However, this neglect can lead to major health problems later on. Dr Thulasidevi KC, senior consultant at Rajah Hospital, Chavakkad, explains.
Postpartum UTI: Causes
Excessive pressure and minor injuries to the bladder and urethra during childbirth increase the risk of infection. In addition, vaginal discharge (Lochia) in the first few weeks after childbirth, lack of hygiene, and reduced immunity during this period can also lead to bacterial growth. The use of a catheter during cesarean section also increases the risk of infection.
Dangers Awaiting
Initially, it may manifest as burning or pain while urinating. However, if continuous infections are not treated properly, bacteria can spread upwards and affect the kidneys (Pyelonephritis). A more serious condition is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). This is a condition where the infection spreads to the pelvic organs, including the uterus and ovaries. This can lead to chronic lower abdominal pain and even future infertility.
Antibiotics alone not enough
Usually, when a UTI occurs, antibiotics are prescribed. However, for those with chronic infections, antibiotics provide only temporary relief. This is where the importance of maintaining the vaginal pH level comes in.
Natural defence: Good bacteria called 'Lactobacillus', naturally present in the vagina, fight harmful bacteria. For this, the acidic nature of the vagina (pH 3.8 to 4.5) needs to be maintained.
Modern methods: Soaps containing harsh chemicals or scented washes available in the market can disrupt this pH level. Instead, lactic acid washes with the proper pH can be used only as per the doctor's advice.
Hormone therapy and laser: After childbirth, due to a decrease in estrogen hormone, vaginal dryness and pH imbalance can occur. For this, hormone creams or laser treatments that rejuvenate cells and correct pH levels (Laser Vaginal Therapy) are available today.
Postpartum urinary infection should not be dismissed as a mere discomfort. It is important to recognise such symptoms early on and seek a scientific solution with the help of a gynaecologist.
