According to Kochi-based psychologist and sex education expert Dr Hena NN, various reasons behind certain people experiencing a sense of joy from pain. She explains how this process happens in their bodies.
There are differences among human beings based on genetics and sex hormones. Those who do hard work have higher pain tolerance. When people experience controlled pain tolerance, their bodies adapt to the pain over time. Later, they will be satisfied only if they experience more pain.
Body's natural painkillers
During deep massages, the hormones called endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, are released. This can induce deep satisfaction and relaxation in some people. There are also people who induce pain in their bodies for a sense of novelty or even for sexual pleasure. Experiencing pleasure from pain in this manner, in a controlled manner, has certain benefits too. It helps relieve stress and anxiety, reduce cortisol, and improve mindfulness. However, its effects also depend on a person's genetics, past experiences and brain wiring.
Risks
There are also some dangers hidden in this. Also, the pain can worsen a person's trauma as compared to what it is now, if not done with care.
