Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) or Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) is a common hormonal and metabolic disorder suffered by most girls from their teenage years, and often leads to diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and dyslipidaemia. The symptoms of PMOS are mainly caused by drastic changes in lifestyle and could vary in women of different ages. Dr Arjun V Nair, Department of OBG, Government Medical College, Palakkad, explains.

From irregular periods to infertility, PMOS could be the cause of multiple health conditions in women. Women often get stressed and anxious as they mistake the cysts that grow in the ovaries for cancer. However, a proper diagnosis is possible through an ultrasound scan. The global medical community has renamed PMOS to Poly Endocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome to denote that PMOS is not always caused by cysts in the ovaries and to stress that it is a metabolic condition.

Not the same symptoms
PMOS may not present with the same symptoms in everyone. Irregular periods, excessive bleeding, long periods, acne, hair thinning, excessive growth of body hair and obesity are some of the most common symptoms. Meanwhile, some women may have these symptoms even if they are thin or lean. Their body might look healthy and fit outside, but they may actually be suffering from hormone disruptions. When these symptoms persist, the risk for diabetes and heart-related ailments significantly increases. So, the real and effective treatment to control the symptoms of PMOS is through healthy lifestyle changes.

It is important to reduce the amount of carbohydrates, sugar and fat in your regular diet. Besides, processed food and unhealthy snacks should be completely avoided. Make sure to include plenty of foods that are excellent sources of protein and fibre in your diet. Grains and pulses, too, should be added to your menu. Staying calm by reducing stress is also an important step in treating PMOS symptoms. Moreover, good quality sleep and exercise will keep your mind and body healthy and fit.

When to consult doctor
Do not hesitate to consult a gynaecologist if your periods get delayed for more than three months, or notice uncontrollable growth of body hair, inability to conceive, dark pigmentation on the neck and underarms and uncontrollable weight gain.
