Saline drip gives 700-year-old banyan tree second avatar

A 700 year old banyan tree has been rejuvenated with a month-long medical care necessitated by its near-death condition. The tree had made it into news after medicinal drips and nutritional drips were hung on its branches and support provided to prevent it from collapsing.

The veteran of seven centuries in Pillalamarri in Mahbubnagar, Telangana, stands on a four-acre plot. Doctors were deployed for its care after weakening in bacterial infection.

District forest officer Chukka Ganga Reddy says: “Drips were hung to inject insecticides to the branches, and pillars were erected to support weakened roots. The bacterial infection is now under control. Some of the roots were supported with pipes”

Tourists will be allowed to see the tree after a month but nobody will be allowed to touch it.
