Jayan Cherthala has a special love for his ancestral home

Jayan Cherthala had ruled the mini screen in the 2000’s as an actor and a prominent dubbing artist. Many actors shined on the silver screen borrowing Jayan’s incredible voice. Meanwhile, Jayan is all set to take a break from the mini screen and dubbing to concentrate more on movies. The actor shares his wonderful memories about his favorite houses.

Childhood home

Jayan hails from Thaikattusery near Cherthala in Alappuzha district, Kerala. His parents and his elder sister are teachers. “We lost our plot and house when the Japan drinking water project was introduced. My father had worked mostly in Kozhikode. So, we grew up in our mother’s ancestral home. Ours was a normal middle class family. My maternal grandmother was a treasury officer,” recalls Jayan.

Ancestral home

Jayan and his family currently stay at his ancestral home in Cherthala. “It was a traditional pathinaru kettu (16 sections). However, each section was dismantled and taken away as the family members moved away. The house had been a naalukettu since I can remember. Recently, the house was renovated. The interior spaces have been given a modern look by avoiding the nadumuttam or the central courtyard. The old mud flooring is replaced with tiles. The kitchen too is upgraded to suit the modern times,” explains Jayan.

Family

Jayan’s wife Jayasree had been working as a software engineer. However, she chose to quit her job post wedding. Their son Karthik Siva is a class one student. Jayan is awaiting the release of the movies Maradu and Mohanlal starrer Ram. He has taken a break from the mini screen to concentrate on movies. He had been a very busy dubbing artist until 2005. Now, he occasionally lends voice for movies from other languages that are dubbed into Malayalam.
