Moidu, who runs a successful business in Saudi Arabia, had always dreamed to build a house of his own in his hometown in Kodur in Malappuram district in Kerala. A small house that is almost a decade old had already stood here. Though the family has given a modern makeover to this house, it could hardly be called a ‘renovated’ house as it looks nothing like the old structure. Interestingly, the owner had nodded ‘yes’ to this project by completely taking the architects into confidence.
The family, meanwhile, was not ready to compromise on the quality of the materials and they wanted to have an abundant supply of natural light and air inside the house. The owner says he didn’t get the 3 D image of the house done before the construction began. He visited the site only once for the ritual when the door frames were installed. The family had shared their ideas and opinions with the architects through a WhatsApp group.
The elevation exudes the chic style of the contemporary architectural style. The house, meanwhile, has two car porches that have been designed in the traditional style. The truss roof and the clay tile paved floor add a unique charm to this area. There is also a layer of ceiling tiles beneath the truss roof. A show wall that is highlighted with exposed brick cladding is an eye-catching feature on the elevation. Meanwhile, the long sit-out is adorned with attractive laterite stone claddings.
The tress that had stood in the plot has been mostly retained. The front yard, meanwhile, is paved with natural stones and grass in alternate layers. The compound wall emanates the elegance of amazing brick cladding while the wooden panelling adds a unique dimension to the gate.
Designed in 4800 sqft, this mesmerizing abode has two car porches, a spacious sit-out, formal and family living areas, a kitchen with an adjacent work area, six bedrooms, an upper living area, a balcony and an open terrace.
The entrance door opens to a spacious and elegantly furnished formal living area. An exquisite Arabian carpet that was specially brought by the owner from Saudi Arabia is the highlight here. The TV unit is installed on a wall that is highlighted with veneer panelling. The rotating TV console is an interesting feature.
The dining area and the courtyard are arranged as part of the spacious and open hall. The splendid courtyard is decorated with beautiful indoor plants, adding a hint of greenery. The dining area, meanwhile, is designed in double height. A glass door here opens to the outdoor courtyard. The wash area is arranged in the courtyard. The vertical garden adds to the incredible ambience of the courtyard. Meanwhile, sitting spaces and chairs have been arranged here as it is the perfect spot to relax. A unique texture design called the ‘arch – concrete’ has been tried on the walls on both sides of the dining area. It is another variation of the exposed concreting style. This spectacular feature surely adds a rustic charm to the dining area.
The steps of the stairway are done in a wooden finish. The hand railings, meanwhile, feature the classic combination of wood and toughened glass. The hand railings are continued throughout the upper floor, granting a modish look to this area. The stairway leads to a well-furnished upper living area. The walls that are decorated with green wallpaper set the perfect contrast here. Interestingly, one could easily grab an overview of the dining hall from the upper hall. Besides, this establishes a connection between both the floors.
The bedrooms are designed in unique themes and boast of all the modern facilities. The bath attached bedrooms have wardrobes and dressing spaces too. The spectacularly designed kids’ bedrooms instantly draw attention. The wallpaper with car designs adds an interesting vibe here.
The pantry is furnished in multi-wood with a nano white finish. The countertop too has been paved with nano white. A few high chairs are added here to turn the pantry into a mini breakfast counter. Meanwhile, the spacious work area is extremely functional. A stove and a quaint breakfast counter too have been added as part of the work area.
The housewarming ritual of this stunning abode was celebrated in August last year. The owner, who had seen his house only then, was pleasantly surprised as his house looked more beautiful and elegant than he had expected. He is excited that the architects had done a fabulous job even though he wasn’t here to oversee the construction.
