Washington: Indian-American Anil Cheriyan will helm the Technology Transformation Service (TTS) of the General Services Administration, an independent agency of the United States government.

The Keralite is the former chief information officer of SunTrust Bank, which has its headquarters in Atlanta. Earlier, he was also associated with PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting Ltd, IBM Global Business Services and TVS Clayton Ltd, among others. Cheriyan, an alumnus of the Imperial College London, had left the US bank in March after joining in 2012.

“His previous success transforming how businesses leverage technology to better serve customers will be a major asset in helping the federal government improve its service to the American people,” GSA Administrator Emily Murphy said in a press statement announcing Cheriyan's appointment.

"It was those results and his time with PwC and IBM that attracted the administration," said Jared Kushner, senior advisor to the US President, welcoming Cheriyan to the significant role. (Kushner is the son-in-law of the US President Donald Trump.)

As TTS director, Cheriyan will oversee its Centers of Excellence which aims at modernising the technology infrastructure of the US Department of Agriculture and Department of Housing and Urban Development. He will also guide US agencies to modernise technology by making use of the digital services agency, named 18F.
