Cops conduct inspections to ensure safety of road users. Most often, we think about the documents in the car only during such inspections. Most people do not carry any documents of the vehicle. Some even do not know what documents they need to keep in the car while driving. There are some documents that are required to be kept in the car.
The mandatory documents include the registration certificate of the car, tax certificate, insurance certificate, pollution certificate (for cars that are more than one year old), the fitness certificate if it is a commercial vehicle, and the driving licence of the person who is behind the wheels.
If it is a commercial vehicle, the driver needs a badge. If the vehicle has a learner's sticker on it, the person who is driving the vehicle needs to have his or her learner's licence. Besides, such a driver should have a person with driving licence in the car.
According to law, all new vehicles should be registered within 30 days of purchase. If the vehicle has a temporary registration certificate, you need to carry the temporary registration certificate, insurance certificate and tax certificate.
If a motor vehicles department official or a police officer (of the rank of sub-inspector or above) in uniform asks you to stop the vehicle, you need to pull over and provide the documents for inspection.
According to the rules, the police officer should come to your vehicle to check the papers. If you do not have the original papers, you can have the attested copy of them. Besides, you can also produce the documents within 15 days provided that you have your driving licence with you at the time of inspection.
