Thiruvananthapuram: The subsidy for coconut oil sold through Supplyco applies only to half a litre, although the government claims that one litre of the oil is available at a subsidised rate. However, coconut oil has not been made available in standalone half-litre packs for years.

According to an announcement by Civil Supplies Minister G R Anil, subsidised coconut oil will be sold at ₹349 per litre, and half a litre will be priced at ₹179. The non-subsidised rate is ₹429 per litre and ₹219 for half a litre.

In July, Supplyco sold one-litre bottles of coconut oil at ₹327, but as in previous years, the subsidy applied only to half a litre. This means consumers had to buy the full litre, paying the regular price for the other half. Buying just half a litre with the subsidy is not allowed.

So far, there has been no official announcement on increasing the quantity of coconut oil eligible for subsidy. At the same time, the subsidy amount for half a litre has been raised from ₹75 to ₹140. The new stock for the upcoming Onam season is expected to arrive at Supplyco outlets by next week.
