Reliance Jio has achieved a remarkable milestone in Kerala, with its wireless subscriber base crossing 1.11 crore (11.19 million). This represents an extraordinary trajectory since its launch in September 2016, when it began its journey in the state with just 5.8 lakh subscribers. According to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) as of June, Jio now commands a 26.2% share of Kerala's total 4.27 crore wireless subscriber market.
Over the last decade, Jio has recorded a stellar average annual growth rate of 35.5% in the state. Despite this rapid rise, Vodafone Idea (Vi) continues to hold the top spot in Kerala with 1.27 crore subscribers. Bharti Airtel follows with 97.9 lakh subscribers, while state-run BSNL retains 89.8 lakh users. Following the exit of several smaller players, the Kerala telecom market has essentially consolidated into a tight four-way battle.
Revolutionising the Indian data market
The entry of Jio completely transformed the dynamics of internet usage and pricing in India. At the time of its commercial launch, mobile users had to pay a staggering ₹228 per GB of data. Today, that cost has plummeted to less than ₹8 per GB. This massive reduction in tariffs has triggered an unprecedented boom in mobile internet consumption, with Jio reporting that its wireless network now covers 99% of the country's population.
From telecom player to tech conglomerate
In recent years, Jio has successfully transitioned from a pure-play telecom connectivity provider into a massive digital ecosystem. Under the umbrella of Jio Platforms, the company has diversified into cutting-edge technology sectors, including entertainment, cloud storage, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and enterprise solutions.
Adding to its massive growth story, Reliance Jio is now gearing up to launch its initial public offering (IPO) in the near future. The highly anticipated market debut aims to raise approximately ₹37,000 crore, making it set to be the largest IPO in Indian corporate history.
