New Delhi: All banks, including Regional Rural Banks, will remain open on Sunday, September 27, to ensure uninterrupted banking services ahead of a three-day nationwide strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), the Finance Ministry said on Wednesday.
The UFBU, which claims to represent 90 per cent of the banking workforce, has called the strike from September 28 to 30, primarily demanding a five-day banking week, among other issues.
The proposed strike would coincide with the half-yearly closing of banks on September 30.
The government said it had taken proactive measures to ensure that customers' banking needs are not affected for an extended period, following the weekend holidays on September 26 and 27.
“All Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks will function normally on Sunday, the 27th of September, 2026,” the ministry said in a statement.
The Reserve Bank of India has also approved the functioning of all bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests on September 27, it said.
The Department of Financial Services said the welfare and convenience of bank customers remained the government's foremost priority. The government and bank managements have appealed to the unions to defer the proposed strike and have taken measures to ensure the continuity of essential banking services.
The UFBU's other demands include an update and improvement of pension, a uniform dearness allowance formula for all pensioners, and an option for employees covered under the National Pension System (NPS) to switch to the old pension scheme (OPS).
Several public sector banks have also advised customers to use digital channels, including mobile banking, ATMs, internet banking, Business Correspondent (BC) points and UPI, if the strike goes ahead.
Banks have urged customers to complete essential transactions in advance to avoid inconvenience during the proposed strike.
The three-day strike also coincides with the half-yearly closing of banks on September 30, a key date for reconciliation, provisioning, and treasury and market operations.
