Renault India has officially opened bookings for the highly anticipated Duster Hybrid ahead of its scheduled market launch on October 17. Prospective buyers can reserve the strong hybrid SUV for a token amount of ₹21,000 through the official Renault India website or authorised dealerships nationwide. According to the manufacturer, the new hybrid variant delivers an outstanding fuel efficiency figure of up to 29 km/l.
Formula 1-inspired powertrain tech
The new strong hybrid powertrain joins the existing 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo petrol engines as the third engine option in the Duster line-up. Dubbed the E-Tech hybrid system, Renault claims this technology incorporates engineering insights derived from Formula 1 racing. The setup combines a 1.8-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine (1,789 cc) with two electric motors: a 20 hp motor acting as a generator and a 49 hp electric motor driving the wheels. Together, the system pushes out a combined power output of 160 hp and peak torque of 172 Nm, backed by a 1.4 kWh battery pack.
Innovative transmission and urban EV driving
Unlike the e-CVT power split setup found in rivals such as the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Renault utilises a multi-mode automatic transmission. This fixed-ratio gearbox delivers distinct gear shifts and realistic engine rpm variations as the vehicle switches between electric power and petrol drive modes. The larger 1.4 kWh battery capacity allows the vehicle to operate in pure EV mode for up to 80 percent of typical city commutes, bolstered by regenerative braking and automatic engine stop-start technology.
Filling the diesel void in the midsize SUV segment
With no diesel engine on offer for the new-generation Duster, the strong hybrid model serves as its direct replacement, offering long-distance efficiency without compromising on range. Real-world fuel efficiency will ultimately depend on traffic conditions, individual driving styles, and weather. In the competitive midsize SUV space, the Renault Duster Hybrid will compete directly with established strong-hybrid models, including the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki Victoris, and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
