For buyers searching for a dependable, stylish, and feature-rich compact sedan for daily commutes, Tata Motors has introduced the Aeris. Sharing its mechanical foundation with the Tigor, the Aeris is offered in both petrol and CNG powertrains. Positioned strictly as a personal family car, Tata has confirmed that the Aeris will not enter the fleet or taxi market. This decision allows the manufacturer to load the vehicle with upscale amenities tailored for urban families.
Exterior design and practicality
The Tata Aeris gets a fresh, contemporary front look featuring LED headlamps with integrated daytime running lights alongside an eye-catching infinity LED connected tail-lamp bar at the rear. While its side profile closely mirrors the Tigor, the 15-inch diamond aero alloy wheels give it a distinctively modern presence on the road.
With a generous 170 mm ground clearance, the sedan navigates rough patches and high-speed highway stretches with equal composure. Practicality remains a strong point; the petrol variant boasts a spacious 419-litre boot capable of housing luggage alongside a neatly packaged spare wheel and jack kit. Meanwhile, the CNG variant leverages Tata's innovative twin-cylinder technology, placing the spare tyre beneath the vehicle body. This arrangement leaves sufficient boot volume to accommodate two cabin suitcases alongside three to four soft bags.
Interior luxury and tech integration
Inside, the Aeris offers an inviting cabin focused on driver ergonomics and passenger comfort. Dubbed the 'premium open view dashboard', the layout places all primary displays and control switches within easy reach. Driver comfort is enhanced by a height-adjustable seat, while both front occupants enjoy ventilated leatherette seats and soft-touch dashboard and door pad inserts.
The interior layout centres around what Tata calls a 'command focused cockpit', featuring a tilt-adjustable two-spoke steering wheel and a 'Grand Tech' central console that doubles as a comfortable armrest during long journeys. Rear passengers benefit from ample legroom, integrated headrests, and a fold-down centre armrest with cup holders. Storage solutions are plentiful, with dedicated holders for one-litre bottles, magazines, and maps across all four doors.
Tech features include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, a dual smartphone deck with wireless charging, rear AC vents, a cooled glovebox, automatic climate control, and Type-C fast-charging ports. Crucially, tactile physical buttons are provided for air conditioning and CNG mode toggles, enabling seamless adjustments while driving.
Safety equipment
Tata maintains its strong emphasis on passenger safety. The Aeris comes equipped with six airbags, a 360-degree surround-view camera system with 2D/3D projection, a factory-fitted dashcam, a blind view monitor, electronic stability programme (ESP) with traction control, hill hold control, automatic headlamps, and rain-sensing wipers. In addition, the CNG variant includes a factory-mounted fire extinguisher beneath the front passenger seat.
Engine performance and driving dynamics
Under the bonnet, both petrol and CNG variants are powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine paired with either a 5-speed manual or an automated manual transmission (AMT).
The petrol engine generates 86 PS and 113 Nm of torque, delivering smooth and linear power. Excellent low-end torque makes navigating stop-and-go city traffic effortless, while mid-range responsiveness remains adequate for overtakes. During mixed city and highway testing, the petrol variant delivered a respectable fuel economy of around 18 km/l.
The CNG variant features direct-start capability, producing 75.5 hp and 96.5 Nm of torque. The CNG AMT option uses a rotary dial gear selector and includes steering-mounted paddle shifters for manual control when desired. Clever ECU tuning ensures that performance drop-off when running on CNG is virtually imperceptible.
Ride quality and handling
The Aeris features light steering that makes city manoeuvring a breeze, while offering reassuring weight at higher highway speeds. The retuned suspension absorbs road blemishes effectively. Although the rear suspension has been stiffened slightly to handle the weight of the CNG cylinders, ride comfort for rear passengers remains uncompromised. Body roll is well-controlled through corners, keeping the vehicle stable at speed.
Minor drawbacks include a slightly elevated dead pedal position when using cruise control, and the blind view monitor feeds on the infotainment screen, which can temporarily obstruct navigation maps when activating turn indicators.
Verdict
The Tata Aeris delivers a compelling mix of practicality, comfort, dynamic stability, and fuel efficiency. By offering high-end features typical of premium segments at a price point roughly ₹1 lakh lower than direct rivals, it represents strong value for money. Although some buyers may miss a sunroof, the Tata Aeris stands out as a well-rounded compact sedan for modern car buyers.
