To contest or not? It is solely Oommen Chandy's call

The High Command believes in Kerala the party has no desperate need to make Chandy contest.

New Delhi: The Congress High Command is unlikely to ask veteran leader and former Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election. The final decision will be left to Chandy himself after consultations with the state leadership. This decision was taken after Mukul Wasnik, the AICC general secretary in charge of Kerala, held a meeting with the state leadership in Kottayam on Sunday.

The High Command believes in Kerala the party has no desperate need to make Chandy contest.

The 'A' group does not subscribe to the idea that Chandy should contest since it is a crucial election this time around. No names of sitting MLAs will be suggested either when the central leadership asks for a list.

However, the party leadership in Delhi has set in motion a process to know the mood of party supporters at the grassroots level. The party’s mobile application is garnering opinion from supporters and booth-constituency in-charges as to who should contest. If Chandy’s name surfaces prominently in it, the state leadership will be notified.

The Congress mobile application ‘Shakti’ will soon send questions to the mobile phones of supporters asking who they prefer to be their likely candidate from various constituencies. The method was successful in a few recent assembly polls. The party believes it will help it in the general election too.
