Chennai: BJP President JP Nadda has constituted a high-level delegation from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to visit Karur, where a stampede during a rally addressed by TVK chief and actor Vijay on September 27 claimed 41 lives and injured over 60 people.
The delegation, comprising senior Members of Parliament from various NDA-affiliated parties, will meet the affected families and assess the circumstances that led to the incident. It will also submit a detailed report on the tragedy.
Leading the delegation is Hema Malini, MP, who will serve as the convener. She will be joined by Anurag Thakur, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Tejasvi Surya, and Brijlal. Also part of the team are Shrikant Shinde of Shiv Sena, Aprajita Sarangi, Rekha Sharma and Putta Mahesh Kumar of TDP.
The delegation is also expected to travel to Karur to offer condolences in person, assess the situation on the ground, and engage with local authorities to ensure that relief and rehabilitation efforts are implemented effectively.
Earlier, a police FIR accused Vijay of “deliberately” delaying his arrival at Velusamypuram in Karur district, which triggered restlessness and overcrowding among thousands of supporters waiting for hours under the scorching sun.
The case, however, does not directly name Vijay as an accused. Instead, it has been registered against three party functionaries — Mathyiyalagan (Karur district secretary), Bussy N Anand (state general secretary), and CTR Nirmal Kumar (state joint secretary). The police have arrested Mathyiyalagan in connection with the incident.
