Thiruvananthapuram: A rape survivor from Suryanelli in Idukki district has accused retired director general of police Siby Mathews, the officer who investigated the sensational sex racket case, of casting a shadow over her character in his service story.
Mathews wrote that he was doubtful about the minor girl’s character and suggested that Congress leader P.J. Kurien was deliberately dragged into the case. As many as 39 men were accused of raping the minor girl in 1996.
The survivor complained to the chief minister and the Kerala Women’s Commission that the investigating officer himself had made her and her family the target of another round of public humiliation. The allegation becomes all the more significant as the case is pending before the Supreme Court.
The woman said that Mathews' claims in the book, ‘Nirbhayam’, was a violation of her right to live and she was being humiliated even at her workplace.
Mathews accused the survivor of cooking up stories and withholding information to mislead investigation in the initial stages. He even wrote that the survivor had been molested earlier as a child.
Mathews questioned the survivor’s claim that Kurien was among her tormentors because she had not named him in the first stage. Someone wanted Kurien’s name to be included in the case, he said.
The survivor said that the guess works of the officer had shattered her family. She has also complained to CPM leader V.S. Achuthanandan, who unveiled the book.
