Angamaly: Popular Malayalam actor Dileep, who was recently granted a conditional bail in the February 17 actress attack case, surrendered his passport at the Judicial First Class Magistrate here Saturday.
The bail was granted on October 3 by the Kerala High Court after imposing stringent conditions, including surrendering of his passport, a deposit of Rs 1 lakh and two solvent sureties for the like amount. He was asked to submit his passport in seven days.
Another condition was that he should not tamper with evidence and appear before investigating officers as and when required.
Granting him bail, the HC judge said the investigation against Dileep was in the final stage and his further custody was not necessary.
The actor, arrested on July 10, was in judicial custody and had been lodged at the Aluva sub jail for 85 days. Four bail pleas filed by Dileep were earlier rejected - twice each by the court at Angamaly and the HC.
Dileep in his bail petition contended that he was totally innocent and that he was falsely implicated in the case as part of a larger conspiracy by a powerful section in the film industry with a view to ousting him from the field.
According to Dileep, he was arrested in the case on the basis of the confession of prime accused Pulsar Suni.
The actress, who has worked in Tamil and Telugu films, was abducted and assaulted inside a moving car in Kochi on February 17. Six people, including Suni, were arrested six days after the incident. Suni eventually led the police to Dileep.
