Kollam: Activists of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) on Thursday attacked rivals from the ABVP outside a Kollam police station. The Kollam east circle inspector and about 50 colleagues looked on as the students hit a law student in the head with a stone.

Students belonging to the rival associations had created a tense situation in Kollam. The ABVP wanted to form a unit in the S N Law College but the SFI activists would not let them do it. Even the police who arrived at the college to disperse the fighting students were targeted at.

The Kollam east sub inspector was injured in the melee. The police rounded up four SFI activists and took them to the station, provoking angry reaction from the other students. A group of SFI members had gathered outside the police station when two ABVP members went there to lodge a complaint.

One of them, Ajith, was hit with a stone in full view of the police officers. The police have not registered a case even though the violence occurred inside the police station. The police did not even bother to take the injured student to the hospital, it was alleged.
