Hyderabad: The 22nd party congress of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) came to a close here on Sunday, with Sitaram Yechury being re-elected to lead the organisation for another three years.
The central committee, politburo and other top panels of the party were reconstituted at the mega meet which witnessed heated debates and discussions over the political resolution to be adopted in the coming years, especially in the wake of the general elections due next year.
Kerala, the only state where the party is in power, has retained its prominent positions in the panels with four new members from the state unit of the party being inducted into the central committee.
In the 95-member newly elected central committee (CC), 20 are from Kerala. They include former party geneeral secretary Prakash Karat, state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Veteran party leader S Ramachandran Pillai has been retained in the committee.
Forner Kerala assembly speaker K Radhakrishnan, All India Kisan Sabha leader Vijoo Krishnan, M V Govindan Master and Muralidharan are the newly elected members from Kerala.
Veteran leaders V S Achuthanandan and Paloli Mohammed Kutty have been made special invitees to the central committee. Apart from Pinarayi and Kodiyeri, leaders such as Ramachandran Pillai, P K Sreemathi, E P Jayarajan, K K Shailaja and Vijoo are from Kannur, the party's most strong fortress in Kerala.
In the newly elected 17-member politburo, there are five members from Kerala. They are Karat, S Ramachandran Pillai, Pinarayi, Kodiyeri and M A Baby.
