Pathanamthitta: Veteran Congress leader P J Kurien has hit out at the young MLAs who targetted him on social media for allegedly eyeing another term in Rajya Sabha.
Kurien said he became a parliamentarian after working at various levels of the party for 20 years unlike the youngsters who criticised him. Kurien took to Facebook to defend himself against the Young Turks including V T Balram, Shafi Parambil, Hibi Eden and Roji M John.
"I'm not an expert, but I was able to finish the tasks assigned to me by the party in time," he said.
He slammed the young legislators for taking to social media to criticise him. "I don't have any issue with those who say I should stay away (from contesting Rajya Sabha polls). They should have voiced their opinion in party forums," he said.
He said he had already made it clear that he was happy to abide by any decision taken by the party.
Accusing the young leaders of being ageist, Kurien asked if it was a crime to get older.
"When I was a student and a youth, KSU and the Youth Congress were strong all over Kerala. What's the condition of both the organisations now? Who is to be blamed for that?," he asked.
A section of Congress leaders had recently stirred a hornet's nest in the party by revolting against senior leaders Kurien and UDF convener P P Thankachan, asking them to stay away from the posts of Rajya Sabha MP and UDF convener respectively. While Kurien said he was ready to go by the party decision, Thankachan said he would continue in the post.
Veteran leader Vayalar Ravi on Monday slammed the rebel leaders, calling them 'power hungry.'
