Dubious record for Kerala, 4th in ragging complaints

Pathanamthitta: Kerala stands fourth in the country in raising complaints related to ragging. The UGC has received 24 complaints from the state in 2018 so far. If figures from 2012 are considered, Kerala’s position is eighth. As many as 240 complaints were filed during this period.

The states from where the maximum complaints were received this year are Uttar Pradesh (69), Madhya Pradesh (49) and Bengal (40). From 2012, UGC had introduced the facility enabling students to send complaints over e-mail and helpline numbers. In all, 3,661 complaints have been received from around the country so far.

According to the UGC, justice was ensured for the victims in 3,553 of these complaints. Investigations are continuing in 106 cases. UGC is directly inquiring into 12 cases in Kerala. Six of them are related to incidents which took place in institutions under the Calicut University. Four cases are under M G University and the rest are from engineering colleges.

After receiving a complaint, the UGC sends it to the University concerned. The UGC then seeks a report on the action taken from the University.

All-India figures show that majority of the victims were male students. The number of female students who submitted complaints was just 622.

As many as 44 students committed suicide in India following ragging since 2012. In 2018, two students have taken their own lives.
