Thiruvananthapuram: Efforts to cover up the custodial murder of Udayakumar in 2005 were foiled by the crucial interventions of the then revenue divisional officer K V Mohan Kumar.

Mohan Kumar was called in by the circle inspector to meet a legal requirement after Udayakumar was brought dead to the hospital. The 26-year-old was earlier taken into custody by the Fort police in Thiruvananthapuram. He was hospitalised after he complained of chest pain, the police said.

As the revenue divisional officer, Mohan Kumar was responsible for examining the mystery death. Mohan Kumar, now the director of public instruction, examined the body kept at the mortuary. There were no wounds on the body but the officer spotted blackened marks on the thighs when he asked the mortuary employees to remove the dress from the body. The cops hurried to explain the marks as a skin disease.

“Both upper thighs had blackened marks. My fingers sank when I touched the area. I knew that they were no signs of skin disease. I examined the body in detail and found bruises and marks of beating. I gave a report asking for a post mortem by expert doctors,” Mohan Kumar told Onmanorama.

That report changed the course of the case. The doctor who conducted the post-mortem later wrote that blackened blood spurted out the moment his surgical knife touched the body’s thighs. The procedure was video recorded.

The post-mortem report clearly showed that Udayakumar’s blood vessels were crushed by rolling a heavy object on his thighs. The fate of the killer cops was sealed.

Two police officers were sentenced to death in the case on Wednesday. Three others were sent to jail for the destruction of evidence.

A revenue divisional officer is required to probe a custodial death and send a report to the National Human Rights Commission within 90 days. Mohan Kumar recorded the statements of the doctors who conducted the post-mortem on Udaya Kumar and the doctor who treated the young man before his death. The officer also spoke with the victim’s mother.
