Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has to slash employee numbers to overcome financial crisis, suggests a final report submitted by Prof. Sushil Khanna. The principal secretary in transport department has been asked to study the report and suggest practical solutions within a month.

Professionally competent people should lead the corporation. Buses lying in depots should be fixed and pressed into service soon, the report says.

The current average of 7.2 employees per bus should be brought down to the national average of 5.2, says the report. If implemented by government, this suggestion will affect re-entry of empanelled employees laid off as per a court order. Frequent change of managing directors negatively affects KSRTC’s functioning, the report adds.

Electric buses should be used to decrease pollution and fuel expenses. Workshops should be renewed so that buses can be repaired in one day, it is suggested.

Sushil Khanna, the professor from IIM-Kolkata, was appointed in 2016 to study ways to modernise KSRTC. An initial report was submitted in February 2017. Khanna held consultations with KSRTC management, employees and government department.
