Eranholi Moosa, noted singer of Mappila Paattu, passes away

Veteran singer of Mappila Paattu Eranholi Moosa (75) passed away on Monday at his residence at Gopalpet in Thalassery in Kerala's Kannur district.

The singer was undergoing treatment for the past one month at a private hospital in Kozhikode as he was afflicted with pulmonary diseases.

As there was no improvement in treatment, Moosa was shifted to his house a few weeks earlier for rest.

Noted for many famous numbers like 'Manassinteyullil ninnu' and 'Arimulla punchiri' and many others, Moosa began his singing stint with stage programmes.

His wedding performances are much sought-after in the region. Moosa also starred in the 2003 Malayalam movie 'Gramaphone'.

He has also served as the vice-chairman of the Folklore Academy.

Mappila Paattu or Mappila Song is a traditional song genre popular among Muslims of north Kerala. It uses the Mappila dialect of Malayalam but also has a liberal mix of Arabic and occasional Persian, Urdu, Tamil and Hindi words.
